Bamberg

Bamberg is another UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its well preserved buildings and archetectural styles. During the war it was only slightly damaged (less than 5%) by bombing and shelling. Despite having seen a number of towns in the last few days, Bamberg was a stand out. We started off in the centre of town and proceeded to a pedestrian mall with a market.

I noticed that there were a number of food stands, many selling the local sausages. When in Bamberg you need to eat sausage and try the smoked beer.

Here I am with my bratwurst, mainly to satisfy the people who ask why we are never in any pictures.

Bamberg has many well kept, colourful buildings. Although we have found all the German towns to be very neat and tidy, Bamberg was the best.

This is the old town hall that was apparently built on an artificial island.

Bamberg Cathedral is an imposing sandstone building standing high on a hill overlooking the city.

This courtyard area was used as a set in the Three Musketeers movie with Orlando Bloom.

The inside of the cathedral isn't nearly as ornate as some we've seen but it was still impressive.

Outside of the cathedral there's a beautifully landscaped rose garden and an area that gives a good view over the city.

And here we are with a monastery in the background.

As usual, we wandered back through the less touristy parts of the city and ended up at an old brewery that produces the famed smoked beer. FYI, you can buy the same beer at the LCBO but it doesn't come right out of the cask.

Last night's dinner:

Vitello Tonnato (veal in a tuna based sauce)

Avocado and Pepper Salad

Chicken Breast Cordon Bleu

Duo of Plaice and Salmon Roulade

Baked Alaska

Valrhona Chocolate Cake
