Our Epic Road Trip Begins!

I've decided that if a road trip is over 10 000 km it's ok to call it epic! I think we'll be doing between 10 and 12 thousand km on this one. If not, I take back the epic part!
We left home just before 6 this morning and travelled through Ontario to Sarnia then Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and finally, Wisconsin. There was a bit of rain in Ontario, surprise, but mostly clear sailing the rest of the way. We drove for 12 hours, longer than our usual driving day, and ended up in Madison, Wisconsin. Madison is the capital of Wisconsin and it seems to be a great little city. Since we drove all day, there aren't tons of pictures.

We drove into the downtown area and found this brew pub, called the Great Dane. We also noticed tons of people walking through the area with coolers and lawn chairs. More on that later.

Here's Marilyn at our table in the garden. It was a perfect evening to eat outside. And, there were no bees or wasps!

We tried a couple of their in house beers. On the left is the Texas Speedbump IPA and on the right Black Earth Porter. Both were really tasty. If we didn't have to drive back to the hotel, I would have tried another one!

Wisconsin is famous for cheese and brats so we had a combo of those for dinner. This is a plate of DEEP FRIED WISCONSIN CHEESE CURDS!!! Someone should do this in Toronto.

My dinner was beer braised brats that were then grilled along with mashed potatoes, chunky apple sauce and sauerkraut.

Marilyn had Wisconsin style mac and cheese with a pretzel bun. Carbs plus!

After dinner, we waddled down towards the capitol building where all the people had gone. It turns out that every Wednesday, the Madison Symphony Orchestra plays a free concert in the town square. There were thousands of people there! And, they all had wine, beer and dinner on the lawn! Many had brought little tables as well. It was so civilized!

Here's another view of the capitol building with more of the audience. It was an amazing evening even though we were a bit wiped out from the drive.
We've just decided to head for Bismarck, North Dakota tomorrow, another 11 hour drive. That way, it will only be a little over 8 hours on Friday to get to Saskatoon. Back tomorrow!
