We are really happy to be in Whitehorse, Yukon! They have 2 Tim Hortons', they have lots of real restaurants, gas is only $1.44/litre, our hotel internet is blazing fast and they have a real, full sized liquor store with wine you want to drink. That about sums it up!
Our drive of about 8.5 hours was spent going through patches of rain ranging from drizzle to downpour. The positive side was that the heavy coat of mud on the RAV was mostly washed away. We were driving through clouds that hugged the mountains for a large part of the drive.
On the way past Watson Lake, we found the Sign Forest. This was started by American soldiers who put up signs from their home towns during the construction of the Alaska Highway. There are now over 70 000 signs in the display.
A couple of hours later, we found the continental divide and an example of Yukon's provincial flower, the fireweed. Question: Why is a weed the provincial flower?
We crossed many bridges and this one was the longest on the Alaska Highway in Tetlin, Yukon. This is a newer version of the one built during WW2 but it's still very impressive.
The Yukon has some incredible scenery that is quite different from what we saw in B.C. The mountains are more rounded and there were more open field areas. The most impressive sights were around the numerous lakes and rivers that we constantly encountered.
As this was a long day, we explored Whitehorse for an hour or so and ended up buying some bear spray just in case we have an encounter on one of our hikes. We actually saw a black bear wandering by the side of the road just after entering Yukon.
Here is downtown Whitehorse and a view of the Starbucks from just outside Tim Horton's!
And, finally, for dinner we chose Klondike Rib and Salmon. If you are a food tv nerd, you might know that this restaurant was featured on You Gotta Eat Here. It is a small shack of a place that is very loud and has friendly, boisterous staff. They only open from May until September as the place isn't insulated and part of it is basically a tent. The food was very good after a day of trail mix in the car.
Marilyn had the Alaskan Halibut with brie and Saskatoon berry sauce.
I had the special which was, what else, ribs and wild maple bbq salmon skewers. I was very happy with my choice!
It's hard to believe that we've been retired for 5 years now! Retired life really seems to agree with us as we try to travel as much as possible. Life in the less stressful lane is great!
